An area of high pressure will move in again on Wednesday from the west bringing a brief return to dry, settled conditions.
However, temperatures will be lower than at the weekend when a southerly wind pulled in warm air from a heatwave gripping central and southern Europe.
The day will get off to a fresher start with some spots in the single figures.
The coldest locations, including parts of eastern inland Scotland and north-east England, will see temperatures range from 5 to 8C.
Elsewhere, it will be slightly milder with temperatures between 8 and 12C.
For most, it will be dry with sunny spells and temperatures will peak in the high teens to the low twenties Celsius.
However, for North Sea facing coasts, as an area of low pressure spirals away it will be blustery with locally strong north-westerly winds and early showers.
The winds will ease down gradually through the day and in the September sunshine it will still feel pleasantly warm.
