An oceanfront estate in California's prestigious Laguna Beach has entered the market with a staggering $112 million asking price after its owners transformed it through an extensive multimillion-dollar renovation.
According to an exclusive report by The Wall Street Journal, David and Holly Wilson purchased the property for around $16 million in 2001 before investing approximately $20 million to rebuild and modernise the home, creating one of the most extraordinary residences on the Orange County coastline.
A complete transformation
Perched on roughly 1.02 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the estate spans approximately 14,400 square feet and includes six bedrooms.
The property was originally built in the 1970s by financier Boyd Jefferies and his wife, Sharon, but had reportedly remained largely unused for several years before the Wilsons acquired it.Rather than making cosmetic upgrades, the couple embarked on a two-year reconstruction project that significantly reimagined the residence. One of the biggest engineering challenges involved reinforcing the cliffside property to meet modern building standards while preserving its dramatic oceanfront position.
The owners reportedly spent more than $3 million on underground steel and concrete reinforcements designed to protect the estate from coastal erosion and comply with updated construction codes. Because the home predates California Coastal Commission setback regulations, portions of the residence, including the great room, library and primary bedroom, extend beyond today's permitted building lines giving them the rare sensation of hovering directly above the ocean.

Luxury with uninterrupted ocean views
The renovated home combines contemporary luxury with features rarely found in newly built coastal properties.A spacious motor court welcomes visitors, while the estate also includes a private amphitheater designed for large gatherings and events. One of the home's standout features is the primary suite's retractable wooden roof, allowing occupants to sleep beneath the stars or enjoy uninterrupted views of the night sky at the touch of a button. The residence also comes with a wine collection that owner David Wilson estimates is worth around $1 million. Artwork by renowned artists including Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Don Sorenson remains inside the home, although both the art collection and wine inventory are available only through a separate purchase. Over the years, the estate has hosted numerous large-scale gatherings. According to the owner, church events, political fundraisers and family celebrations regularly took place on the property.
For his 70th birthday in 2017, Wilson even hired The Beach Boys to perform for approximately 400 guests.
Why the owners are selling
David Wilson, founder of Wilson Automotive Group, and his wife relocated to Nevada full time in 2020. With their two children now grown and living independently, the couple says they no longer need such an expansive property. They have already purchased a smaller nearby home, making this the right time to sell their longtime Laguna Beach residence. The owners also indicated that market timing was not the primary motivation behind the listing, although they acknowledged they preferred not to be the first sellers in the area to seek an asking price exceeding $100 million.
Could it set another Orange County record
If the estate achieves its full asking price of $112 million, it would establish a new benchmark for Orange County residential real estate. The listing comes shortly after another Laguna Beach oceanfront mansion in the exclusive Emerald Bay community reportedly sold for $110 million, setting the current local record.
The Wilson property now aims to surpass that milestone. Luxury brokers say Orange County's ultra-high-end housing market has experienced growing demand in recent years as affluent buyers expand their search beyond traditional luxury destinations such as Los Angeles and Malibu. Buyers from the San Francisco Bay Area, New York and other wealthy markets have increasingly looked to Orange County's coastline, drawn by its combination of privacy, oceanfront locations and comparatively limited supply.
Beyond its size and architectural design, the home's greatest advantage lies in its irreplaceable location. Because modern coastal regulations would prevent many of its ocean-hugging design elements from being replicated today, the estate represents a rare opportunity to own a residence that literally extends over the Pacific Ocean. For buyers seeking one of Southern California's most exclusive waterfront homes, the Laguna Beach compound offers not only luxury amenities but also a piece of coastal real estate history, one that has been transformed through more than $20 million in upgrades and is now seeking a record-breaking sale.
