Texas family donated 153-acre ranch for a major baseball, softball and soccer park

A Texas family has helped turn a former ranch into a major sports destination in New Braunfels. The Zipp Family Sports Park covers roughly 150 acres and is designed around tournament-level baseball, softball and soccer, giving local athletes a larger place to compete and train.

The project grew from years of planning and combines the history of the Zipp family property with facilities intended for a fast-growing community. What was once a family land is now becoming a public space where young athletes, visitors and local residents can gather.

How did a 153-acre ranch become the Zipp Family Sports Park

The project has its roots in a long-standing need for more recreational space in New Braunfels. According to SpawGlass, a 2006 sports complex study identified the need for expanded facilities in the city.

Planning continued for years, supported by voter-approved bonds, a grant from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and a $15 million commitment from the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation.The Zipp family became an important part of that plan. Norris Design reports that the project began with the family donating its 153-acre ranch for a new sports park. According to Community Impact, the city purchased 123.5 acres from the Zipp family in 2017 and the family later donated another 25 acres.

The land was not simply an empty site waiting for development. It had been connected to the Zipp family for generations. Community Impact reports that Tim Zipp described an ancestor, Johann Jacob Zipp, arriving from Germany about 180 years ago. The additional 25 acres had been a family ranch where relatives lived and worked and where the family built lasting memories.

What does the new sports complex offer local athletes

The completed park is built to handle several levels of play, from youth and recreational games to competitive matches and tournaments.

As reported by Community Impact, the facility can host regional and statewide tournaments, potentially bringing more visitors to New Braunfels and increasing spending at local hotels, restaurants and businesses.According to SpawGlass, the 153-acre park includes tournament-ready baseball, softball and soccer fields, more than 700 parking spaces, three concession and restroom buildings, an amphitheatre and other site amenities.

The facility was constructed by the SpawGlass San Antonio Civil team in partnership with Norris Design.The scale is particularly significant for local youth sports. Community Impact reports that New Braunfels has one of the largest Little League organisations in North America, supporting more than 2,500 young athletes each year. Existing city fields have been difficult to reserve, meaning the new park gives local teams an opportunity to host tournaments closer to home.The design also leaves room for growth. According to Norris Design, its plan used a two-phase approach across the full 153 acres, allowing for future development while working within different levels of approval. The broader vision includes facilities capable of supporting the community as its recreational needs continue to expand.

The ranch landscape is incorporated into the design

The designers did not treat the property as a flat surface that needed to be completely reshaped.

Norris Design says the site has a complex natural form, so the park was arranged in tiers for different sports while making use of the existing landform. This approach also helped support natural drainage and reduce the need for unnecessary changes to the landscape.That connection with the original property is visible beyond the shape of the fields. SpawGlass reports that wood from historic Zipp family barns and fencing was reused in interpretive displays at the centre of the park.

These displays give visitors a way to learn about the family's history and the role the property played in New Braunfels.

What makes the park different from a conventional sports facility

Water management is one of the project's notable features. Community Impact reports that the park uses a reclaimed-water irrigation system supported by an on-site storage tank, with native grasses and plants included throughout the site.SpawGlass reports that reclaimed water from a nearby power plant is carried through an underground system to a 550,000-gallon storage tank.

That water is then used to irrigate the athletic fields and landscaping, while drinking water supplied by the city serves the park's buildings.The landscape and irrigation choices were designed to make the park more efficient while helping preserve funds for continued park development.

Importance of this new park beyond sports

The Zipp Family Sports Park represents a long process that eventually turned family land into a public asset. Community Impact reports that the project involved about 20 years of planning and three years of construction before opening in 2026. Its reported cost was $41.1 million.For the Zipp family, the project also offers a different future for land with deep personal meaning. Instead of remaining a private ranch, part of the property can now be used by thousands of athletes and families.
