Heavy rain and flash flooding swept across parts of the US Northeast on Monday night, causing major travel disruptions and emergency declarations across several states.
Flash floods inundated areas of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, stranding vehicles and closing major roadways. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency and urged residents to remain indoors.
In New York City, subway lines were suspended or severely delayed, and parts of major roads were shut due to high water and fallen trees.
Emergency crews in Westchester County rescued drivers from submerged vehicles, while in Pennsylvania’s Mount Joy, more than 7 inches (17.8cm) of rain fell, flooding homes.
