Running in -8°C on shifting sea ice, 91 athletes from 22 nations took part in the Summer edition of the North Pole Marathon.
Travelling aboard an icebreaker from Longyearbyen, competitors reached the Geographic North Pole after several days at sea.
There, polar specialists marked out a safe course, protected at its perimeter by Polar Bear guards. The marathon began at 08:48 CEST, with runners battling poor visibility and biting winds.
Britain’s Oleg Polyntsev claimed victory in 3:43:25, while Becca Pizzi of the US set a new women’s record at 4:46:26. A team of 5 runners, including two septuagenarian, also secured a Guinness World Record.
