India’s long wait for a FIFA World Cup appearance became a talking point again after popular YouTuber IShowSpeed said he would be willing to play for the national team and help them reach the 2030 World Cup.

The American content creator made the comment while watching the FIFA World Cup quarter-final between Spain and Belgium during a livestream. Speed, who has been a regular presence around the 2026 World Cup, has repeatedly spoken about India and asked why the country has not qualified for football’s biggest tournament. His latest remarks caught the attention of fans online.

IShowSpeed says he would play as winger, striker or attacking midfielder for India

During the livestream, a viewer mentioned India in the chat, leading Speed to speak about the country’s football team.

“India do need some help. I’ll play for India. I’ll help y’all make it to the next World Cup,” he said. “Hey India, if y’all want to make it to the next World Cup, Speed’s right here.”British YouTuber KSI, who was watching the match alongside him, then asked where exactly he would play on the field. Speed replied, “I’ll play winger. Winger, striker or midfield.”

KSI laughed and asked whether he was planning to play everywhere.

Speed then narrowed down the role he believes suits him best. “I feel like I’m the position right under the striker,” he said. “I feel like I’m an attacking midfielder.”Speed is known for his love of football and has often played the sport during videos and public appearances. Over the past few years, he has built strong connections with football fans around the world through his coverage of major tournaments and interactions with players.

What are the chances of IShowSpeed playing for India?

While Speed’s offer was clearly made in a light-hearted way, FIFA’s eligibility rules would make such a move extremely difficult. Players representing a national team generally need to meet citizenship requirements and other eligibility conditions set by FIFA. As an American citizen with no known Indian heritage, Speed would not qualify to play for India’s national football team under current rules.Even so, his comments once again highlighted India’s absence from the World Cup.

The country remains one of the world’s biggest sports markets and has millions of football fans, yet it has not qualified for a FIFA World Cup since its only appearance in 1950, when the team ultimately did not participate in the tournament.Speed’s interest in India is not new. He visited the country in 2023 and has frequently spoken about its fan base during streams. Throughout the 2026 World Cup, he has continued to ask why India is missing from the competition and has shown support for Indian football supporters.Although he is unlikely to ever wear the Indian national team jersey, Speed’s massive online reach could still bring more attention to Indian football. For now, India’s road to the 2030 World Cup will depend on its players, coaches and football development plans rather than a celebrity signing. But Speed has made it clear that if there were ever a chance, he would be ready to volunteer.
