Heavy rain triggered flash flood warnings across parts of New Jersey on Sunday, leaving thousands of homes and businesses without power and causing flooding on roads in several areas.According to NJ.com, more than 5,600 customers were without electricity as of 7:50 am, based on outage reports from the state's four major utility companies. More than 2,000 outages were reported among PSE&G customers in Camden County.
Vehicles stuck as floodwaters rise
Officials in Paterson reported flooded roads and vehicles stranded in deep water around 7:40 am. Some passengers were rescued from their vehicles, while a video posted on Facebook showed emergency services rescuing at least two people from a vehicle trapped in deep water.In Paramus, police said a vehicle became stuck in high water on Kalisa Way. The driver managed to get out of the vehicle before officers arrived.
Flood warnings remain in effect
A flash flood warning was in effect until 9:30 am for parts of Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Passaic counties, while a separate warning for Morris County remained in effect until 10 am. Most of the state was under a flood watch through noon, with storms expected to clear during the afternoon.
Rainfall totals were expected to average 1-2 inches, with some areas potentially receiving 2.5-3 inches. Rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour were possible.The National Weather Service also issued a Flood Warning for the Saddle River near Lodi in Bergen County, effective through 4 pm Sunday. The river had reached 5.2 feet by 9:45 am, above its 5-foot bankfull stage, and was expected to rise to around 5.7 feet before falling later in the afternoon.The National Weather Service warned motorists against driving through flooded roads or going around barricades as heavy rain and rising waterways created dangerous conditions across parts of northern New Jersey.
