A man who set fire to a beauty salon at the start of a gangland feud in central Scotland has been jailed for seven years and four months.

Logan Carlin admitted throwing a petrol bomb through the window of the Belle Cheveux salon in Leith in Edinburgh in March last year.

In another attack 10 days later, Carlin set fire to a garage in the city.

Carlin's defence lawyer said the 24-year-old appeared to be regarded as a "useful idiot" by others involved in organised crime.

Police believe the salon was the first building targeted in the dispute between groups in the east and west of the country.

Carlin, from Bruntsfield, previously admitted the fire attack when he appeared at the High Court in Edinburgh via video link from HMP Saughton.

He also pleaded guilty to another charge of wilfully setting fire to DB Auto Services on Milton Street, Edinburgh, 10 days after the salon attack on 16 March.

Judge Lord Summers said the offences were aggravated by links to serious and organised crime.

The judge told Carlin: "You were a member of a crime group. The partner of a person involved in another organised crime group was a part owner of the salon.

"It is clear from the narrative the purpose of the attack was to retaliate against the actions of that rival group.

"Had that fire taken hold, the residents in the properties above would have been in mortal danger.

"Thankfully, the fire did not take hold and nobody was hurt."

There was extensive damage inside the salon

A total of 62 people have been arrested as part of Operation Portaledge - the police operation set up to investigate the spate of violent incidents.

A Scottish man, who was based in Dubai at the time, is alleged to have started the feud by targeting a crime group led by Mark Richardson.

The attacks later spread across the west of Scotland where there has been rivalry and violence between the Daniel and the Lyons families dating back more than 20 years.

Violence raged through Glasgow and Edinburgh during the first half of last year, but the dispute appears to have settled down.

Several people with links to the Daniel family are said to have been targeted during the wave of attacks.

Police Scotland has maintained it has no evidence the double murder is linked to the feud, despite conflicting claims by a senior Spanish officer.

A number of high-profile gangland figures were arrested in Dubai in last September, but have since been released.
