A baby and three people have died after a car hit trees on a busy dual carriageway in Derby.

Emergency services were called after a red Hyundai car left the A38 and crashed into trees - between the A50 Toyota Island and the A516 - at about 23:00 BST on Saturday.

Derbyshire Police said the passengers, two women, 18 and 30, and a man, 36, died at the scene. The baby girl was taken to hospital where she died shortly after.

The force said the driver, a 33-year-old man, was taken to hospital for serious injuries where he remains. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police said all those involved were from Leeds in West Yorkshire, adding their relatives have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

"Our thoughts are with them at this most distressing time," a spokesperson said.

The carriageway was closed for several hours while emergency services dealt with the crash, but it has since been reopened.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any dashcam footage has been urged to contact police.
